Past Exhibitions

“When my eyes are open” is another visual arts venture for Grace Kotze Projects which will be housed in the Breathing Space, 191 Bulwer Rd. This is a beautiful venue, centrally placed and open to all.

We live in a beautiful world that presents us with the most incredible array of creatures/plants/landscapes etc. which are further added to by the manner in which humanity has altered our environment. “When my eyes are open”, is an exhibition which explores the individual artists vision of the intriguing and captivating world in which we reside. Some opt for a sensual approach to embrace the juicy visual world while others examine the world in a more analytical approach.  These are only two viewpoints but the show boasts unique and intriguing outlooks from each artist’s in their chosen field.

Including
Bronze sculptures, Ceramic works, paintings, collage, printmaking, woodwork, stencil art and drawings.

Homosapien (2013)
The show is bound together by a group of artists tug towards the human form. As much as the exhibition is about the portrayal of humanity, it is also about the artist’s personal journey within the self.

Each artist’s uniqueness of vision is fused with their passion for their chosen material. At times, manipulation of material describes the artist’s relationship with the human form as much as the chosen subject.

On the show are printmakers, painters and sculptors from all over the country. Included are, Christiaan Diedericks, Ledelle Moe, Sarah Lovejoy, Vulindlela Nyoni, Niel Jonker, Grace Kotze, Peter Rippon, Elizabeth Balcomb and Sandra Hanekom

Exhale (2014)
Unthinkingly we are hemmed in by the way we see, feel and create. The external voices of cultural norms, ethical judgements, relationships, academic take on " good art" etc. are ones that often sneak in unnoticed. I would like to propose that you all give yourself permission to take a deep breath, reassess what the process of making art means to your inner core, and then work from that place. Use this as a time of exploring, rewarding, reacquainting and celebrate you, through the process of creating. So this is not about repeating what sells the best, gives you a safe space within your chosen society but rather digging deeper into the place where you can relishes in the juicy process of creating from the self.

Within this show, as a curator I want to further explore the dialog between different mediums, including both floor and wall spaces. I also want to further my interest in how the monochromatic and more colourful works allow one another to have such crisply heard voices.
